In 2006, Samford University was reclassified as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Samford is the only private national research university in the state of Alabama. Undergraduate research allows students to explore original, creative solutions to complex problems. Students and faculty work together to conduct research, publish results, and present findings. All University Fellows are eligible for a $500 grant to underwrite research activities during their junior or senior year.
Alabama Power Foundation Research Fellowships
In 2007, the Alabama Power Foundation gave a $225,000 endowed gift to the University Fellows Program specifically designated for undergraduate research. Alabama Power Foundation Research Fellowships are available exclusively to the University Fellows. These competitive fellowships provide a $2,500 stipend and an additional $1,000 for supplies and expenses. Additional Research Opportunities
University Fellows are encouraged to seek out research opportunities in their academic major, at other institutions, and from external foundations. Current Fellows have secured summer research funding from the Teagle Foundation and the Samford Undergraduate Research Program. In addition, Fellows have participated in summer research at Baylor University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Read more...
